What is the role of International Chess Federation?

In short, FIDE (International Chess Federation) is the central body of the sport of chess. Basically, it regulates all the chess competitions which are held at international level.

The International Chess Federation was formed in the year 1924 in Paris, France. It was formed under that motto “Gens Una Sumus”, which means “we are one family” in Latin.

This chess federation is basically a non-governmental institution and is one of its kinds in the world.  The best part is that about 190 countries are its affiliate members. It has helped to a great extent making chess a truly global event.

In fact, in the year 1999 this chess federation was recognized by the international Olympic Committee as a Global Sporting Organization. Recently the International Chess Federation has moved its headquarters to Lausanne in Switzerland. It is a city which hosts various sports associations such as the International Olympic Committee.
